The Championship is finally back: a catch-up on where we left off

After nearly three weeks without second tier action, the Championship returns this weekend. Here's a rough catch-up on where we left off, the winners and losers from the opening eight games.

It's been near enough three weeks since a ball was last kicked in the Championship. It's felt as if we've had another mini pre-season in that time, with some clubs travelling abroad for warm-weather training camps, others playing friendlies to retain sharpness, and Middlesbrough even hosting a legacy match in front of a sold-out Riverside. But fear not, Championship football returns this weekend, kicking off once again on Friday night as West Ham United host Queens Park Rangers.

Blame the new calendar. FIFA has stitched the old September and October international windows together into one 16-day block, so national sides could squeeze in four fixtures rather than two. Whether an extended break is a blessing depends entirely on whether your side was flying or starting to fall apart when it began.
