Preston North End sacked Paul Heckingbottom on the 13th of September, the day after a 1-0 home defeat to Lincoln City. Heckingbottom's position felt untenable at that point. It was a sixth defeat in seven Championship games.
The struggle was ongoing from January: Heckingbottom had earned just 5 wins from 27 league games in 2026. Rather than sitting on their hands, North End decided to act quickly and dispensed with Heckingbottom, placing Jason Euell in interim charge for the club's trip to QPR last weekend. A Johnny Kenny brace had PNE two up before the break, but a second-half QPR resurgence meant they only left with a point. They now sit 23rd in the table on four points.
